Conquering the frontline manager complexity crisis – Report

A note from our leadership

Much of the conversation about the changing world of work is centered on office workers. Yet, it’s estimated that 70-80% of the workforce doesn’t sit behind a desk (BCG¹). Navigating today’s reality with a large number of frontline or “deskless” workers poses significant challenges. We’re seeing an explosion of different types of work and workers, ongoing labor shortages, a mismatch between available skills and evolving roles, and ever-changing compliance. At Dayforce, we call this the “complexity crisis.”

People at all levels of the organization feel the pain of this crisis – but each group experiences it differently. Senior leaders see the impact on business continuity, productivity, and the bottom line. Managers experience day-to-day inefficiencies, outdated tech, and a balancing act between workers’ and leaders’ competing priorities. And employees grapple with a rising cost of living, unrelenting change, and the constant pressure to do more.

Our new research set out to examine this dynamic in organizations with a high number of frontline workers. We surveyed workers, managers, and executives on a variety of different workforce challenges, and we saw a marked difference in their responses. While managers and workers were often closely aligned, there was a significant gap between their perceptions and those of executives.
